人之生也柔弱，其死也坚强。草木之生也柔脆，其死也枯槁。
故坚强者死之徒，柔弱者生之徒。是以兵强则灭，木强则折。强大处下，柔弱处上。

Translation & Meaning

人活着的时候身体温暖柔软，死去之后躯体便变得僵硬坚直。万物草木生长的时候枝叶柔嫩清脆，死去之后便变得干枯焦硬。 所以僵硬逞强属于趋向死亡的一类特征，柔和灵动才属于充满生机的一类特征。 因此一味恃强穷兵的军队终致覆灭，僵硬不弯的大树遭遇狂风最易折断。 凡僵硬粗大者只能居于底下承重，而柔韧灵动的新梢枝叶反倒高居其上迎风生长。
