古之善为道者，微妙玄通，深不可识。
夫唯不可识，故强为之容；豫兮若冬涉川；犹兮若畏四邻；俨兮其若客；涣兮其若凌释；敦兮其若朴；旷兮其若谷；混兮其若浊；孰能浊以静之徐清？孰能安以静之徐生？
保此道者，不欲盈。夫唯不盈，故能蔽而新成⒃。

Translation & Meaning

古時候善於體行大道的人，心思精微玄妙而融通無礙，深邃得難以測度。正因為難以測度，只能勉強描摹他們的氣象： 審慎啊，像冬天蹚過冰河；警覺啊，像敬畏四方鄰境；端莊啊，像赴席作客般恭敬；融和啊，像春冰即將消融；敦厚啊，像未經雕琢的原木；開闊啊，像空曠幽深的山谷；渾厚啊，像包容泥沙的江水。 誰能在渾濁紛擾中藉由靜定而慢慢澄清？誰能在安寧寂靜中順應生機而徐徐萌發？ 持守這一大道的人，從不追求自滿盈溢。正因為不自滿，才能推陳出新、生機常在。

Commentary

青禾散人評注：「孰能濁以靜之徐清？」渾水若強行攪動只會更濁，唯有靜置不動，泥沙自沉而清水自現。心煩意亂時莫急於作為，先靜下來，清明自生。
